Google to Block Links in YouTube Shorts Comments to Reduce Spam

In a bid to curb the rising tide of spam and fraudulent activity on its platform, Google has announced a significant policy change for YouTube Shorts, the popular short-form video experience. Starting August 31st, Google will block access to links included in comments and descriptions of YouTube Shorts videos, as well as links that appear during live streams. This decision comes after an observed increase in malicious links and descriptions being shared, including malware and phishing attempts.

YouTube Shorts, akin to the format popularized by TikTok, offers users the ability to create and share vertical videos lasting from 16 to 60 seconds, often accompanied by music. The feature has gained immense popularity since its introduction, resulting in an influx of both legitimate creators and malicious actors seeking to exploit the platform.

Google acknowledges the role links play in allowing creators to share information and recommendations with their communities. To address this, the company is rolling out a phased approach. Beginning August 23rd, a new feature called “Highlighted Links” will be introduced on channel pages. This feature will enable creators to showcase specific links, such as websites, social profiles, or merchandise pages, adjacent to the ‘Subscribe’ button.

Furthermore, by the end of September, Google will establish a novel way to connect long-form videos with Shorts by linking their titles. This integration aims to provide users with a more cohesive viewing experience across different video formats.

Google’s commitment to combating spam goes beyond link control. The company has been actively refining its policies and systems to identify and eliminate fraudulent accounts and behavior. In a marked improvement, the number of channels removed or canceled due to impersonation or misuse has surged by over 35 percent when compared to the same period last year.

To enhance comment moderation, Google has introduced more potent tools, including the ‘Increase Scrutiny’ function. This feature identifies and holds potentially spammy or inappropriate comments for user review, providing an additional layer of protection against undesirable content.

The company’s multifaceted approach, encompassing link restrictions and robust moderation tools, underlines its commitment to preserving the integrity of the platform and safeguarding the user experience from malicious actors.

In a digital landscape increasingly fraught with fraudulent activities, Google’s decision to clamp down on spam and misuse within YouTube Shorts showcases its dedication to fostering a vibrant and secure community for content creators and consumers alike.
